Bioengineer
After graduating in 2001, Maarten spent about 10 years doing research and consultancy work on contaminated soil at KU Leuven (PhD 2005), ARCADIS and VITO. He worked at VITO until 2017, developing new separation and conversion technologies for by-products from the agri-food industry. After a short stopover with the province of Limburg, he started working for Flanders’ FOOD as Innovation Manager in 2019.
His tasks include starting up and managing projects about sustainable agri-food chains and valorising by-products and circular bio-economics. Innovation and sustainability are always the starting points in his job. Exciting scientific research that is relevant to Flemish and European companies is his greatest motivator.
Maarten’s favourite hobby is discovering new, fun places in Europe together with his family. Nature, culture and the local cuisine - including accompanying wines - are an essential part of these trips. Healthy mountain air completes the picture.
